K Sujatha Rao, a 1974 batch IAS officer from Andhra Pradesh, on Thursday assumed charge as secretary in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
She succeeds Naresh Dayal who retired on Wednesday.

Rao was earlier secretary of Department of AIDS Control and Director General National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO).
She had also worked in the ministry at director, joint secretary and additional secretary levels and had been involved in many key initiatives that the ministry has taken over the years.
