The BJP on Thursday night said the summoning of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi by the Supreme Court-appointed SIT was a part of the legal process and the entire picture will be clear only when all facts are known.
"The summons to Narendra Modi by SIT are a part of the legal process which shall be dealt with as per the process of law," BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad told PTI.
He said that some of the complaints made have been filed after six years after the incident.
Accusing the NGOs who have taken up the cause of the victims, Prasad alleged it was a conspiracy on their part to defame Modi for their vested interest.
"The same SIT headed by former CBI director R K Raghavan had filed a report in the Supreme Court in April 2009 severely castigating these NGOs for making false allegations and also tutoring witnesses," he said.
He accused these NGOs of maintaining a "conspicuous silence" on naxal massacres, terrorists activities and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi.
Defending Modi, Prasad said though the Gujarat riots were unfortunate, the state police had till date convicted 586 rioters, of whom 70 were those who had been given punishment ranging from seven years to life imprisonment. PTI
