The government on Friday clarified that the tenure of the Cabinet Secretary has not been fixed at four years but an incumbent may be given a maximum of four years in the post in "public interest".

"The Central government may, if considered necessary in public interest, give extension in service to a Cabinet Secretary in the Central Government for such period or periods as it may deem proper subject to the condition that his total term as such Cabinet Secretary does not exceed four years," an official release said.
The Union Cabinet in its meeting on Thursday approved the amendment to Fundamental Rule (FR) 56(d) to the effect that allows the government to take a decision in this regard.
The Cabinet Secretary enjoys a fixed tenure of two years.
Incumbent KM Chandrasekhar, who became Cabinet Secretary in June 2007, is presently on a three-year tenure.
