The city, which has not seen a single spell of rainfall this October, experienced sharp cool winds, a dust storm and hail in some areas in the afternoon. Most Delhiites were caught unawares.

According to the weatherman, light rainfall can also be expected on Wednesday.

The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be between 30 degrees Celsius and 17 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.

“Tuesday’s rainfall was a result of low pressure weather system in Rajasthan,” the weatherman added.

Tuesday’s squall started at 3.15pm and within two minutes, the temperature dropped from 30 degrees Celsius to 27.4 degrees Celsius.

At 5.30pm, the temperature was a cool 21 degrees. The maximum temperature was recorded at 31.8 degrees while the minimum was recorded at 17.4 degrees Celsius. Both temperatures are normal for this time of the year. The humidity oscillated between 92 per cent and 39 per cent.

“The rain has made the city cold suddenly. I wonder if this signals an early start to the winter,” said Himani Chandra, a resident of Saket.

The unexpected rain, however, did dampen the Dussehra spirits as a number of Ravana effigies were damaged because of the squall across the city.
