The Delhi Commission for Women has sought a response from Delhi University on reports of discriminatory hostel rules for girl students

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has sought a response from Delhi University vice-chancellor Yogesh Tyagi on reports of discriminatory hostel rules for girl students.

The DCW has sought data on various aspects of the hostel rules, as it has instituted a committee to look into the gender discrimination report by Pinjra Tod — a student activist group fighting discriminatory hostel rules on university campuses.

The DCW has given the VC 15 days to respond to queries on gender-based reservation in different hostels of the varsity.

The commission has questioned the different deadlines to enter the hostel for men and women. They have asked the DU to explain why men and women were charged different amount of fee. The DU will also have to give information on the reservation for transsexual students and those with disability.

The move follows after students of the Hindu College recently protested against the discriminatory rules and higher fee for girl students.

With students complaining that the hostel facility in DU is inadequate for women, the DCW has asked for plans and proposals for the expansion and construction of new hostels.

“We have demanded copies of letters to the authorities requesting the construction of hostels,” said Swati Maliwal, DCW chairperson.

The commission wants to complete the probe before the start of the new academic session. It has also warned of strict action if the data sought is not provided by the university.
