Yamuna water recedes, evacuation drive continues

After wreaking havoc in the Capital for two days, the Yamuna waters began receding gradually on Thursday. According to the flood and irrigation department, the water level was down to 206.5 metres at 5 pm. HT reports.

The evacuation process near its banks, however, continued on Thursday with the Delhi government setting up 1,153 tents to accommodate more than 10,000 flood victims.

But many of the victims seemed unhappy with the arrangements and claimed that the government was not doing enough.

“They have disconnected power supply to our area. We had asked for emergency lights, but they haven’t been provided. The ground floor of our house is still flooded though the water has gone down. We have been sleeping on the rooftop for two days. We can’t even cook, and the food provided by the government is so bad that even prisoners will refuse to eat,” said Ganesh Pandit, a resident of Yamuna Bazaar.

“All the flood victims are being provided food, drinking water and health services. We are doing everything that we can,” said Sheila Dikshit, Delhi Chief Minister. Revenue minister Arvinder Singh also reviewed the ongoing flood relief operations.
