The most popular women’s college in Mumbai has plenty to offer Shriya Ghate reports

Sophia College for Women was founded in 1934. It is affiliated to the University of Mumbai and comes under the Governing Body of the Society for Higher Education for Women in India.

The college staff comprises the Religious Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus as well as laypersons. The college got an ‘A’ grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2003 and 2009.

Programmes: The college offers several courses at the junior college, graduate degree college and postgraduate degree college level. At the degree college level, three main courses are offered — BA, BSc and BMM (Bachelor’s in Mass Media).

At the postgraduate level, it is MSc in life sciences with specialisation in neuroscience, microbiology and biochemistry.

The college also offers a postgraduate diploma in quality assurance in the food industry and the pharmaceutical industry and a postgraduate diploma in clinical analysis (DCI), apart from several UGC-approved courses. Among these are a certificate course in women’s empowerment and a certificate course in cooking and baking. These courses fall under the Sophia Centre for Women’s Studies and Development.

Extra-curricular activities: The college campus hosts several activities for students around the year. The three main events are ‘Peace Fortnight’, ‘Kaleidoscope’and ‘Ananya’.

Peace Fortnight takes place in August, and all the clubs and associations of the college come together to participate in activities under the theme of ‘peace’.

This week also sees a weeklong prayer service, and Hiroshima-Nagasaki days are observed. The event ends with a grand march from the college to the August Kranti maidan on August 15, Independence Day, to celebrate our freedom and also the Quit India movement.

Kaleidoscope is an annual inter-collegiate youth festival with participation from more than 10,000 students from colleges all over Mumbai and beyond. This festival is managed entirely by Sophia students.

Ananya is an academics-related inter-collegiate festival, where a theme is chosen in connection to the goals of the college. Workshops, seminars, debates etc are held, which students have the option to attend.

The college also has clubs and associations such as The Sophia College
English Dramatics Association (SCEDA), Western Music Club, Elocution and Debating Society, Sophia Sports Association etc.
