After the IIT fee hike, the human resource development (HRD) ministry has approved a proposal of the National Institutes of Technology (NIT) council to raise the fees of these educational institutions from Rs 70,000 to Rs 1.25 lakh per annum.
In a separate decision, the ministry has also decided to hike the fees of the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) from Rs 15,000 per semester to Rs 25,000 per semester. The changes will be applicable for new students.
“A decision has been taken to raise the fees at NITs for undergraduate as well as post-graduate courses for which Rs 70,000 was charged. Now the students will have to pay Rs 1.25 lakh per year for these courses,” said a senior HRD official.
A total fee waiver for the differently-abled, students from the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) community and those belonging to families with annual income less than Rs 1 lakh has also been approved. Students from families with annual income less than Rs 5 lakh will also be entitled to a fee waiver of two-thirds the amount.
There are 31 NITs in the country, including Srinagar, Manipur, Patna and Goa among others. The HRD ministry had hiked the fees for IITs from Rs 90,000 to Rs 2 lakh per year recently.

{{/usCountry}}“For NITs too, the concessions given for IIT students have been approved,” said a senior official. The decision regarding the IISER fee hike was taken at a meeting chaired by HRD minister Smriti Irani on Thursday. “The fee hike will only be for new students who will take admission this year and not for those who are already studying,” a senior official said. Officials added that the fee has been hiked to provide more resources to these institutions so that the highest quality of education can be provided to students.
