From next year on, English (Honours) hopefuls would not have to hop from college to college to give entrance tests. Delhi University plans to start a common entrance test for English.

More than 21 colleges in Delhi University hold separate entrance tests for students who want to get admission in the English (Honours) course. This is because the board results in English are not indicative of a student’s aptitude or capability to take up the course at under graduate honours level.

“The entrance tests that colleges hold are similar in nature. So we want to hold a common entrance test that would enable a student to take admission in the college of his or her choice,” said a senior DU official.

“Separate entrances for professional and applied courses like Journalism (Honours) should be held but a common test should be suffice for English. Delhi University had tried to start the common entrance test from this year itself but faced vehement protest from the colleges.

According to a senior DU official, the University cannot force the colleges to agree for the common entrance test as DU follows a federal structure and colleges enjoy autonomy. “We have, however, decided to put pressure on the colleges from higher authorities next year,” said the official.
