A group of students at Jamia Millia Islamia have started free English language classes for over one hundred underprivileged students studying at the university.
The group, which calls itself ‘Dr Kalam’s Wings — a MITR initiative’, recently conducted a screening test, including a written test and an interview, for over two hundred students who applied for the classes and short-listed 110 students. The students who did not do well were selected for the free classes.
“We conducted an exam for testing basic English abilities for over 200 students who had registered for the classes. We selected 100 students from the bottom and interviewed them. The students who did not perform well and belonged to underprivileged sections of society were selected for training. The idea is to help those who are weak in English,” said Abdul Hasnat, a final year student of MBA, who is part of the group.
Hasnat said eight teachers will teach the classes, which will have 25 students each. The classes started from October 6 and will be conducted once a week for one hour for each batch.
“There are many students at our university who come from the backward areas and did not have access to quality education. Knowledge of English is very important in the present era. Some of us thought we could spare time and teach interested students. We have developed study material in accordance with needs of the students,” Hasnat said.
