After several delays, the online process of joint allocation of seats for undergraduate courses offered by Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institute of Technology (NITs), was to start on Monday after several delays, could begin even later.
The allocation process is running behind schedule as the CBSE has not declared the ranks and a few other state education boards are also yet to declare the Class 12 marks on time. Joint Entrance Examination (Main) ranks are calculated by giving 60% weightage to the entrance exam scores and 40% to Class 12 scores.
More than 11 lakh students were to be part of the process for nearly 34,000 seats in 85 technical institutes, including 18 IITs and 31 NITs. The joint allocation of seats has been marred by several delays. According to the earlier schedule, the JEE (Main) ranks were to be announced on June 24, while the online filling of choices was to begin from June 25. However, it was postponed to Monday, June 29. “We are in the process of publishing ranks and it will be announced the earliest,” said a CBSE official.
A senior admissions official at IIT-B said, “The seat allocation process will get delayed as CBSE has failed to release the ranks. The marks have to be sent to National Informatics Centre (NIC), which will check and upload the data. We can then activate the portal and start registrations immediately. We have not received any communication from CBSE.”

{{/usCountry}}Admission authorities said the CBSE needs to be well-prepared from next year. “We cannot allow such delays to affect the admissions and academic process at IITs and state engineering colleges,” said an official from IIT-Bombay.
The delay has caused panic; worrying IIT and NIT aspirants from the city. Ananya Trivedi, an aspirant from Thane said, “We fear the delay will affect the first semester at IIT. We will have fewer days to complete the syllabus. Moreover, it has created anxiety among students aspiring for NITs and not confident of getting through to the IITs.”
