An updated map of India, which indicates the newly formed state of Telangana, and Palghar district, has been uploaded on the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) website.
Since the textbook has the old map printed on it, students will have to refer to the updated map on website, said the state board officials.
“With the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana was formed on March 1 last year. Similarly, Palghar district was carved out of Thane on July 31 last year. Hence, students will have to refer to the revised maps,” read a circular issued by the board.
Krishnakumar Patil, secretary, MSBSHSE, said these maps could not be included in most of the existing textbooks as the books were already printed before the maps were released. “By the time we received the maps, it was too late to include them in the textbooks,” he said, adding, “We have issued a notification to inform students and teachers of the development.”
Patil said students would be expected to study from the revised maps for the upcoming Classes 9 and 10 exams. “In the exams, students will be tested on the revised maps, which include the new state and district,” said Patil.

Meanwhile, geography teachers said the textbooks do not contain any information on the new state or district. “There is no chapter or paragraph on Telangana or Palghar in the textbooks,” said Ravi D, a social studies teacher from Bhandup.
