The exam was held on June 3 to fill approximately 782 vacancies.

Many candidates, who appeared in the exam, as well as experts, said the questions were tougher than last year’s.

Sashwat Guha, a law graduate from Calcutta University, found the first paper of general studies complicated.

“This year the pattern of the first paper was totally different from what it used to be in previous years. The second paper which is on civil services aptitude test was comparatively easier. This is for the first time that I have appeared for the examination and I am keeping my fingers crossed,” Guha said.

Purshottam Mishra from Patna said there were many applied questions and they were a “bit tricky.”

“Most of the questions were form environmental science and economics. The questions were time-consuming,” Shashikant Kumar, another aspirant from Patna, said.

Srirangam said CSAT (GS Paper 2) was tougher than last year and that the English component (reading and comprehension) was of Class 12 level.

“The cut off could be about 10 marks less than last year - about 105,” he said.

This is a qualifying exam and its marks will not be added when the final merit list is prepared after the main written exam and the interview of the candidates.

Those who clear the preliminary exam will have to apply online again in a new form (Detailed Application Form) provided to them for the Civil Services (Main) Examination scheduled to be held from September 28, 2018.

The exam is conducted in two stages: Preliminary (objective type) for selection of candidates for the main exam and then the civil services (main) exam (written and interview) for the various services.
