Shimoga Rural comes under the Shimoga district and it is one of the 224 Karnataka Legislative Assembly Constituencies. People of Shimoga Rural voted for Karnataka Assembly Election 2023 on May 10 and the result was declared on May 13.
Shimoga Rural assembly constituency had 2,07,041 electors in 2018, out of which 1,03,626 were male voters and 1,03,409 females. The None of the Above (NOTA) option got 0.6% votes.
In the 2018 Karnataka Legislative Assembly Election, there were 7 candidates in the fray from Shimoga Rural constituency. Shimoga Rural was one of 104 seats won by the Bharatiya Janata Party. It was a close contest with Bharatiya Janata Party's K.B. Ashok Naik winning the election upstaging Janata Dal (Secular)'s Sharada Puryanaik by a margin of just 3,777 votes.
The top three candidates split 98.5% of votes between them. Bharatiya Janata Party's K.B. Ashok Naik got a total of 69,326 votes, while Janata Dal (Secular)'s Sharada Puryanaik secured 65,549 votes. Indian National Congress's candidate Dr Sreenivas Kariyanna grabbed the third spot with 33,493 votes. The top three parties got 40.6%, 38.4% and 19.6% respectively.
In Karnataka Assembly election 2013, Janata Dal (Secular)'s Sharada Pooryanaik outperformed Karnataka Jantha Paksha's G.Basavannappa by 10,109 votes.
