Olympian Sushil Kumar, who is getting engaged today, is super excited. The wrestler’s fiance, Savi, is the daughter of his coach Satpal Singh. An MBA graduate, Savi is the eldest of three sisters, and has been friends with Kumar for years.
“Hum milte toh rehte the, lekin yeh nahi socha tha ki shaadi ho jayegi (We’ve known each other for a while, but never thought we’d get married),” he says.
Though an arranged marriage, Kumar is happy with the match. “The parents fixed the marriage, and we are both happy with it,” he says.
So, what gives him goose bumps now — a wrestling bout, or an impending marriage? “In wrestling I know what to expect,” he says. Does that mean he’s nervous? “Nervous kyun honge (Why should I be nervous)? Koi galat kaam thodi na kar rahe hai (I’m not doing anything wrong, after all).”
