In Tokyo, fans are planning a sleepover surrounded by his possessions; in Los Angeles, devotees will visit his grave; and on TV and radio stations around the world, lovers of the King of Pop’s music ‘won’t stop till they get enough’. As fans, museums and members of Michael Jackson’s family mark Friday’s one-year anniversary of the singer’s death with exhibits, tributes and flash mob dances, Delhi is not lagging behind on the Jackson mania.
“I’m not gonna let MJ’s music die. We’re doing a weeklong tribute in his memory, dedicating 15 minutes to him every night. We’ve also created an altar, where MJ fans can light candles,” says co-owner and DJ of Café Morrison, South Ex, Sidharth Talwar. “We’ll also show his film, This Is It, as well as a host of MJ news footages collected since his death.”
At Kuki in GK-2, club owners have planned a Jackson look-alike as well as a moonwalk competition. “Those wearing white gloves will be given free entry and a free beer. We’ll also do a special collage, where his fans can leave their messages,” says Rummy Sharma, DJ and co-owner of the joint. “We’ll be playing some of his best songs. His music was always ahead of his time,” says DJ Cheenu of Smoke House Grill, GK-2.
Others are celebrating in a more demure fashion. At its Saket and Gurgaon branches, Buzz will observe a minute’s silence in MJ’s memory. “I look up to MJ as my mentor, my guru,” says Sumit Sethi, resident DJ of Buzz. Fans of the icon too are gearing up for the commemorations. “My friends and I will dress up like Jackson — hats and all — and go club-hopping,” says Sushant Malhotra, 21, a student.
