The authorities in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) seem to be on healthy eating drive as they have banned the sale of junk food in the campus eateries. Some of the banned items include packaged wafer, carbonated drinks, burgers and hot dogs, among others.
Though most of the students at JNU are outraged by this move, some are more than happy about it. HT City asked JNU students and students of different universities on this move. “Though I am personally happy with this as I am conscious about my health, my friends really aren’t. I don’t think this will work for long. Strict measures have been implemented before as well but then it is all back to square one," said Vikas Gupta, Phd student at JNU.
Many in the campus feel that they are old enough to decide what they want to eat. "They are forgetting that we are not in school. 60
percent of students in JNU are research scholars. I would understand if they are banning smoking in campus as passive smoking also affects others, but how can they stop us from eating what we want? How does it help them from banning junk food in the campus is what we are not able to understand," says Faiz Ashrafi, Phd a JNU student.
After smoking ban and now this, many campus students are left wondering if the Campus authorities will also act as moral police soon. "After smoking ban they have now banned junk food. Soon they will also ban us from wearing what we want and then more will follow," says Neha Nagpal, a student of PGDAV College in Delhi University.

“Nobody is going to follow this. It is a residential colony and people live with their families. This not only affects the students but them as well,” says Madhulka Trivedi, a JNU student.
