It was a calm entry for cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar in Parliament on Monday, unlike the swearing-in ceremony of the other recent celeb addition to the Upper House, actor Rekha, who was mobbed at the gates.
Tendulkar, who was accompanied by wife Anjali, took oath as a Rajya Sabha MP in Hindi, and said, “It is an honour to be part of Rajya Sabha and I fully accept it.”
He, however, said cricket will always come first, and he is not hanging up his boots. “At this moment, my focus will be on playing cricket. I will see what changes I can bring in not just cricket but also other sports as and when I can find time,” said the 39-year-old.
Alongside, the Master Blaster — the only active sportsperson in Parliament till date — was making waves online as the top contender for the title of The Greatest Indian.
While Anna Hazare hopes he will work against corruption, others on Twitter hope he’ll work, period. “I wish RS MP Sachin Tendulkar doesn’t get bowled out to the various bowling tricks of our trickster politicians,” tweeted user Siram Karthik.
“He’s a legendary batsman, but can he be a good leader, social worker or policy maker?,” asked another user, Feluda.
