It’s biting cold outside. Inside the main hall at the ongoing 2010 Auto Expo in Pragati Maidan, scantily clad girls flash their brightest smiles and prance around the cars and bikes on display. Shockingly, several videos of such models, clad in mini skirts and posing next to automobiles at the Auto Expo have found their way to the YouTube with thousands of viewers posting lewd comments. With girls suffering harassment for no fault of theirs, one wonders whether just cars aren’t hot enough for the annual motoring gala?
Check out some of the titles of videos posted on You Tube: Delhi Girls… The Mast Ladki; Delhi Girls and n Cars - Hot Girls; Sexy Girls. The comments range from humorous to humiliating and obscene. Varun 9t writes, “This girl was the center of attraction at last Auto Expo, let’s see if we see her this time.” “She was so hot man, I really forgot to see the bikes after seeing her,” says another post.
For the girls, it’s only good money that makes up for the humiliation. Some get paid as much as Rs 10,000 per day to stand there and look pretty. “Some people just come to check out the girls. The way they stare at every part of our body, it’s as if we are standing naked,” says Neha Sharma, who is at the Toyota Stall. “But the payment at the end of the day makes up for all of it.” Aparajita Bhatia, who is at the Hyundai stall, says, “We have bouncers to keep the unwanted elements at bay, but even they can’t stop the whistles and cheap talk.
Some people even click pictures, not of the cars but us!” The stall owners were shocked, when informed about the videos. “Such perverts should be punished. There is no way of keeping a check on video recording as people seem genuinely interested in the cars,” says a manager of a stall without wanting to be named.
