All art forms around the world — whether they are movies, stories, music or paintings — are permutations and combinations of the same nine emotions, seven plots, seven musical notes, and three primary colours!

Interestingly, there are just seven basic plots in literature: man v/s nature, man v/s man, man v/s the supernatural, man v/s the self, man v/s god, man v/s machine and man v/s the environment.

Pick any film in the world and it will fall into one of those categories. Well, except Robot, which falls into nearly all of them. It’s Rajni v/s self, Rajni v/s machine and Rajni v/s God. Wait, Rajni is God!

Complex emotions
Just as an artist blends colours to create various shades on his palette, an actor needs to blend the various human emotions.

I had an audition this week, where the director explained the difference between one-dimensional anger and the complex emotion to be portrayed. The beauty of giving a character layers is an art, which you learn with experience.
A good actor can slip under the skin of a character that’s directly in contrast with him / her in real life. I’m lucky my director sees that potential in me.

Trying to create a deep, sexy voice, or a fake Yankee accent is just not cool!

Be yourself, because a great performance is an honest one. A fake Monalisa or a wannabe Amitabh Bacchan don’t quite make the cut. What’s truly invaluable is being original and most importantly, being honest. Mind it! ;-)
