Mithi river blockage? Malaria? Ecological imbalance in the coastal areas? Leave it all to the gods. Now Kalki, the tenth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, will fight the bigger problems in Mumbai. Vimanika Comics will release three books —Golden Book of Gods and Lords, Silver Book of Sages, and Black Book of Demons — as a lead-up to the main series of I Am Kalki.

True to Hindu mythology, Kalki comes to Mumbai in the age of Kalyug, where he will be seen combating modern-day corruption, environmental and social issues. Here Kalki is a teenager from Uttaranchal, who hides his identity and takes his true form only in the night.

Karan Vir Arora, founder of Vimanika Comics, says, “We’ve been doing research on Kalki for five years and this will be our take on his adventures. It’s an unlikely Kalki in a contemporary set-up. He tells people that there will be a new world again.”

Arora wanted to address problems like artificial constructions, use of plastic and diseases such as malaria and dengue. “We’ll talk about the garbage collected in the Mithi river, blockages due to constructions, need to save the coastal areas, the seven islands of Mumbai connected through land reclamation and mushrooming of pharmaceutical companies — all leading to ecological disturbances. Kalki shows how to maintain nature’s balance,” Arora explains.
