Designer clothes, 50,000 cash on the go, a dozen bottles of beer, fast cars and daredevilry. This is the picture police are painting of 24-year-old Shahid Khan, who was arrested on Tuesday, a day after allegedly killing two people in a drink driving incident on the Safdarjung flyover. The accident bears similarity to the “BMW case” of 1999, when high-flying rich kid Sanjeev Nanda killed six people in a nearby area.

Khan was hauled off a plane bound for Almaty at Delhi’s International Airport. A medical student at the Kursk Medical University in Russia, Khan was in India for a ten-day holiday. Khan is from a prominent family in Mewat and was visiting his cousin Alam, the son of a Delhi-based builder.

Khan’s activities on Orkut were what helped police nab him. A police source, who asked not be named, said his whereabouts were discovered from his updates on the site. On Monday night, Khan was on a drive with his cousin and a friend. “First they drove around a Santro, but they crashed the car so they abandoned it for the Honda City which was involved in the incident,” said the source.

The source said Khan has a Ukranian girlfriend back in college.
