India saw its most visible presence on the Oscar red carpet on Sunday night, even as the 83rd Annual Academy Awards ceremony was termed ‘boring’ for a lacklustre act by hosts Anne Hathaway and James Franco. Bollywood ‘it’ couple Abhishek and Aishwarya Bachchan, who were invited by the Academy, attended their first Oscars. “We were holidaying in LA and were invited by the organisers. Colin Firth is a dear friend and we are here to applaud his performance,” said Ash at the event.
An unexpected guest was actor Mallika Sherawat, who tweeted about the stars she met. Though music composer AR Rahman lost out to The Social Network (Best Original Score) and Toy Story 3 (Best Original Song), he won the audience with his performance of If I Rise from the movie 127 Hours, with singer Florence Welch.
The biggest winner of the night was The King’s Speech, which won four Oscars — Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Screenplay. Natalie Portman, 29, accepted the Best Actress award in a flowing Rodarte gown for her role in the thriller Black Swan.
Boring hosts
James Franco and Anne Hathway, the hosts of the Oscars, indulged in a role reversal of sorts, as Hathway wore a bow-tie and Franco dressed like Marilyn Monroe, before inviting Russell Brand and Helen Mirren to present the best foreign language film award. “You got to wear a tuxedo,” he joked to Hathaway. “So I wore this. Weird part is I just got a text message from Charlie Sheen.” The hosts, however, got a lukewarm response.
Author Shobhaa De tweeted, “Oscars boring. Change the presenters.” Orlandosentinel.com wrote, “Hathaway and Franco were an odd couple. She gushed, and he held back. When he let go, the results were cringe-inducing: He appeared in drag as Marilyn Monroe. Maybe Hathaway and Hugh Jackman would have worked as hosts, but the writing was so lame.”
