If recession has you running for cover or your planets spell impending doom, astrologers have a new remedy for you — a black dog. This advice has so many takers that pet shop owners say sales of black dogs have increased manifold.
Mohan Kadam of Windsor Pet Shop in Khan Market says, “We are getting clients who have been asked by their pundits to buy a black dog and feed it. Black Labradors are most popular.” These buyers are willing to shell out any amount to procure a black dog, so, a black Labrador normally for Rs 8,000 to 10,000 now sells for as much as Rs 15,000.
Those who cannot afford expensive dogs make do with stray puppies. Ramesh, a car cleaner in East Delhi, procured a black puppy from a litter of stray dogs. He says, “My jyotishi said that I should feed a black dog for luck, happiness and money especially on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.”
A Delhi-based astrologer explains (on the condition of anonymity) that this belief dates back to the ancient Lal Kitaab, a branch of Vedic astrology. “A dog indicates Raahu and if you have a black dog, that you’ve kept like a family member, it helps you escape the wrath of Shani. A dog also prays for the longevity of his master,” he says.
Prem Kumar Sharma, Vaastu expert agrees that black helps negate Shani. “There have been instances where an unwell owner recovers suddenly just as his dog becomes unwell and dies. This is because the dog takes his master’s illness upon himself.” Black dogs with little white patches on paws or tails are even better, but, he says, all dogs absorb the negativity in the house.
