Two months ago, vet and dog lover Dr Zareen Patel passed away leaving a homeful of 135 dogs behind as a part of her legacy. The philanthropist, during her lifelong career, had adopted strays and mutts with deformities under her care and rehabilitated many of them. The Pune-based doctor’s pets have now found temporary shelter at The Indian National Kennel Club (INKC).
City-based event management company, Bombay Elektrik Projekt (BEP), have now taken up the responsibility of taking care of their diet by helping to raise funds that will go into feeding the canines. “We have kept a target of Rs 37,000, which will go into buying 450 kg dog food as a month’s supply. The INKC are trying their best, but have limitations. So we decided to help out,” says Rajeesh Marar, head, operations, BEP.
Making sure their patrons are involved in the process, BEP is organising an event called Old Books, where they are encouraging people to donate and buy second-hand books. The proceeds from the sales will be donated to INKC for the care of Dr Patel’s pets. The two-day sale will be held on June 11 and 12 at the Hive, an open space for performers in Bandra. Old Books has been popular with avid readers, who like to collect old-yellowed hand-me-down novels that can always find place in many booklovers’ libraries. Which is why, attaching a cause to the successful event becomes all the more pertinent.
“We have been organising the event frequently and have been trying to donate for causes in the past. We had also previously collected blankets and old clothes, which we had donated along with the proceeds of the Old Books sale to children afflicted by the floods in Ladakh last year,” says Sudeip Nair, co-founder of BEP.

{{/usCountry}}Besides this, BEP is also trying to push the envelope further, by approaching pet stores and dogfood brands to donate items to the INKC. “Yes, we are trying to strike a deal with them. Pets need a lot of care and if we can get some of the big names on board, it will only help them more,” says Marar.
