The first two days of the ongoing Atelier Theatre Festival saw street play performances by various colleges of Delhi University at two venues in the city — Arts Faculty, Delhi University and Sri Venkateswara college.
Presented under the banner of Atelier Theatre Society and Rock Castle, and co-sponsored by HT City, the plays aimed at creating awareness about various social issues. Participants also got a platform to discuss their performances with other colleges and theatre professionals.
Sri Venkateswara college’s Ki Farak Painda Hai got an overwhelming response by the audience. The play portrayed the destruction caused by terrorism and how the corrupt system and the laidback attitude of citizens is responsible for its growth. “It’s a wake up call for everyone,” said a performer.
Another hard-hitting play was Indraprastha college’s Hum Bhool Gaye Hai, a play based on the apathy of society towards national issues like language, right to vote and regionalism. “We did this play because we believe that much needs to be done to make people aware about these issues of national concern,” says Kanupriya Kesari, a student.
Other issues raised included the ills of caste system, drug abuse, and superstition. “Street plays can be very impactful. We see students getting all stirred up after watching certain performances. It affects them,” says Alok Nagpal of Rock Castle.

{{/usCountry}}Others plays that were a part of this street play fest were Hum Kisi Gali Jaa Rahe Hain by Jesus and Mary College, Udaan Abb Bhi Baaki Hai by Kamala Nehru College, Ummeedon ka Janaza by Lady Irwin College and Aakhir Mein Bhi Ek Insaan Hoon by Lady Shri Ram College.
