Being Human – The Salman Khan Foundation, was started with the aim to save lives through healthcare initiatives. The Foundation has now partnered with Marrow Donor Registry India (MDRI) to create a world-class registry of marrow donors in India for patients who have blood-related illnesses like leukemia, thalessemia, aplastic anemia and congenital immunodeficiency states. The MDRI and BeingHuman are reaching out to generation next by working with colleges to create awareness of the need for a world-class registry in India.
One of the first colleges to participate in this initiative is KJ Somaiya Institute of Engineering and IT, Sion. As part of their annual college festival, Surge’11, Somaiya will conduct a marrow donation drive in their premises, along with a ‘Marrowthon’ — a 6 km run showing support for the cause. Surge ’11 will be held from March 3-5. As a build up to the event, a class-to-class presentation was conducted on February 23, where several students came forward to support the event and a donation campaign was conducted in the college for in-house students. On March 3, 4 and 5, which is when the intercollege festival is on and a lot of students are expected, more support is expected for the cause.
