Looking for unconditional love, loyalty, compassion and support? I know it sounds suspiciously like an advertorial in shaadi.com, but actually it describes the virtues of my St Bernard, Buddy and my Beagle Chhotu! I stand guilty on all counts for giving them rather unimaginative names, put that down to human failure, the dogs, are however, awesome in every way.
They give me the kind of support the shooting establishment in our country should be providing... Jokes aside. On a typical day, they follow me faithfully, to the range, no matter how early in the morning it is. Once we get there, they settle down and begin their typical day with me... watching me practice, and rooting quite patiently, for me, like two rather indulgent best friends.
There is an initial moment of pandemonium and loud barking when, like a lot of my human friends, they wonder who the ET like creature, standing in shooting gear is! I am still trying to understand if this chaos is a general disdain for my “LOOK” or if they are genuinely puzzled by the transformation. However, knowing their level of intelligence, I tend to suspect its some kind of fashion police censure.
Dogs are sanguine — they are far more understanding than the average girlfriend. Mine fall asleep discreetly whilst I indulge in my all consuming passion. I could be shooting for hours, oddly they stay with me through the whole exercise. I must confess to having dedicated a lot of my medals to them out of sheer gratitude for this unstinting support.
I hate to see dogs ill-treated, tormented and tortured! They give us so much in return for food and shelter... and pedigree doesn’t have anything to do with this. However, badly the day has gone, watch your stress just melt away when you get the most boisterous welcome as you walk into your home. The classification “Canine Vulgar is” doesn’t quite cut it for me... nothing is vulgar about this species! Give me “dog values” any day... I truly believe we have lots we can learn from them.
