There’s something about the Obamas. Whether it’s alighting from flights or attending events or posing for photographs together, Barack and Michelle exude a romantic chemistry. They hold hands, share smiles and even mirror each other’s poses in public like no other first couple, leaving body language experts impressed.
“Both the president and his wife reflect a lot of like-minded mirroring in their actions. It’s uncanny, but in most pictures during their visit to India, they are even posing in a similar manner,” says body language advisor Rita Gangwani. “The frontal folding of the hands while being photographed shows that they are so in tune with each other that they subconsciously react similarly. This shows a strong and comfortable chemistry between the two, which remains unfazed even as they are watched by millions,” she adds.
No other first couple, Indian or otherwise, is known to have charmed the public with such a comfortable romantic equation. "This obvious affection was missing when Laura and George Bush came visiting. Even Bill and Hillary Clinton looked distant when they came to India together," says relationship expert, Dr Rachna K Singh.
The Obamas’ unrestrained public display of affection has been observed by news watchers in the past, too. In an article on todayshow.com, American relationship counsellor and author Ian Kerner wrote, “I have observed during their (Obamas’) interviews together that they make a lot of eye contact. It’s refreshing to have a first couple who are comfortable dancing, cuddling and holding hands.”
So what does this show? “This indicates that Michelle is a rock-solid support to her husband. Also, together, both exude a sense of contented power. Holding hands signifies security and a sense of oneness. At times, they are playful, and connect in a way where they are oblivious of the crowd,” says psychiatrist, Dr Deepak Raheja. “Striking an identical pose denotes that they are totally secure and have identical aspirations,” says Dr Singh.
