April was never this hot. As the mercury shoots up, and Delhi temperature hits record high, everyone including stray animals and birds feel the brunt of the soaring weather.
In summers number of helpless animals die because of dehydration and thirst. Like every year, concerned Delhiites are doing everything possible to help the animals beat the summer sun.
HT City gets you a glimpse of what Delhizens are doing and what you can do to help.
“I keep bajra and water on my apartment terrace and boundary wall for birds every day. I ensure that the bowl is always filled with fresh water,” says Manisha Dubey, a resident of Ashok Nagar in East Delhi. “Even the squirrels love to cool themselves by dipping in the water placed in the bowls,” she adds.
Show that you care
Stray dogs in your colony not only guard the area from thieves but also don’t allow dogs from other places to come into their territory. “I try feeding dogs in my colony atleast twice a day. Mutton and eggs are very expensive, so I give them bread and milk, which keep them happy. And in summers this is especially helpful because then they don’t go empty stomach and succumb to the heat,” says Anita Wadhwa a resident of Tilak Nagar. Some residents have got dogs in their areas sterilised and vaccinated, and this helps them in taking better care of the animals. “I feed cats and dogs in my areas throughout the year. The dogs in our area have all been vaccinated. I wipe the face of the younger ones with wet cloth in the evening to reduce the effect of the heat,” says Malvika Sinha a resident of Noida.
Help the animals
Keep a birdbath or bowl of water on your terrace or balcony. For the stray dogs. You can also keep water in plastic or earthen bowls.
Mix small amount of glucose in the water to prevent dehydration.
If you find an injured or dehydrated animal or bird, then take them to a vet. Call animal ambulance if you cannot do it yourself.
Once a day keep cold milk outside for the stray dogs, especially pups who are prone to die because of the heat.
If you cannot do anything to help them, then don’t make it worse by throwing stones at them and shooing them away.
