Summer vacations are perhaps the most tedious period for most parents who are constantly on the lookout for innovative camps to keep their kids engaged, until schools begin. And some parents want more than just enrolling their kids in run-of-the-mill drawing and painting classes, in their neighborhood tuition teachers home. Enter summer camps with a difference.
Dishita Vora, Director, Kidzart India says that parents want their children to have fun during their vacations, but learning alongside is an added incentive. “The focus at Kidzart is to have meaningful fun instead of just telling kids to go berserk, splashing colour on paper,” says Vora.
Around the world
Through Around the World and Ticket to Outer Space, Kidzart’s two summer camp themes, the participants fill a mock passport with a few lines on different countries, make souvenirs for each land and make 3D planets. “We help the kids craft Chinese lanterns, draw Baltic Elephants and paint. Each exercise will enable them to learn more about a particular country. Similarly, the Ticket to Outer Space will have kids make planets with simple materials and do a canvas painting of a rocket shooting into outer space,” explains Vora.
Saurabh Saxena of Iken Scientifica Workshop, a Mexus Education offering, pushes the envelope. The workshop, modeled on real-life simulation, is a hand-on exercise where kids are given practical problems to unravel on their own. And not just any problem. Saxena explains, “Just to give an example, each kid will be asked to build a device, for which, he or she has to go the mock market place, fabricators and small and medium sized industry set-ups in the venue. It is the kid’s responsibility to buy (virtual money) material from the market place, then go to the fabricator to build the actual device, seek advice from the experts on the subject, and when the product is ready, go to the industries and try to sell it to them.”Saxena and his team have been conducting such workshops for a few years now. What makes them click is that parents recognize that their children are polishing real-life skills in the process.

Parel based More goes to different homes to teach kids craft, dance and yoga. The only condition is that there should be a group of at least five kids in each batch. “Kids are also very health conscious. I teach basic crafts, film and contemporary dance moves and yoga to children,” says More of the unique package.
