Kooky about cooking!

Food is something you can always garnish with love and care, says Shruti Haasan. In the journey of discovering one of her true loves – food, she also discovered a part of her.

A couple of years ago, I couldn't even boil an egg. That's a bit dramatic, but let's just say I was pretty bad at cooking anyway. In fact, I wasn't much of a connoisseur of food either. I would eat whatever, and couldn't really tell the difference between clam and caviar. Food was food. Somebody else made it and I ate it — plain and simple!

Studying in America, little did I realise that I would be savouring much more than the music and knowledge I was receiving. Somewhere along the way, someone introduced me to the best hamburger ever, someone else suggested the best vegan food on Planet Earth, and even the best cheesecake I ever ate. All of a sudden, I was exposed to this magnificent world of exploding flavours and exotic, classic cuisines! Food wasn't just food anymore — it was fantastic! Soon, I was googling the best places to eat.

One thing I missed the most was Indian food. I'd dream about it, crave it at the oddest hours and basically tear up at the memory of sambar or dal makhani. This is when I decided I need to learn cooking to feed my greed for Indian food. Let me tell you it was a frightening experience at first. I burned my fingers and came pretty close to burning the entire kitchen down as well.



At first, it was a challenge to get anything to taste like food at all. Some of the dishes I experimented with had the vague flavour of the wooden pencil I used to chew on in school in a boring class, so I realised I may not be on the right track. I decided to keep my head up and continue with my culinary adventures.
