So you called a dumb, stupid person an ullu. Well, wake up and smell the coffee.
The ullu, or the owl, is the fashion accessory of the moment, as spotted on hotties like Sonam Kapoor, Pooja Bedi, Shruti Hassan and Drew Barrymore. All of them have worn owl pendants, triggering a trend.
Asmita Manjari, 24, has been looking for one ever since she saw Sonam wearing it. “It’s quite funky yet subtle. I think it will look cool with my dresses,” says Manjari. Her friend Tanya, 23, intern at a fashion house, calls the owl pendant “the perfect summer accessory, a statement piece that isn’t chunky or uncomfortable”.
Believers in destiny should tread cautiously, though. Feng shui consultants say that wearing animal signs spell luck only if they match with your birth sign.
Expert Raman Datta says, “If you see the Zodiac, some signs like Scorpio, Taurus and Cancer are denoted with animal signs. This is based on Chinese astrology that has a 12-year rotating cycle of animal signs.”
The owl does not feature in the Chinese astrology and, interestingly, it is considered inauspicious in Indian mythology.
Feng shui master Mohan Deep says, “An owl brings home the fear of the dark or the unknown.”
But he adds that in certain cultures, like in Greece, the owl is the symbol of wisdom, and “our goddess Laxmi carries an owl, so the bird can be the carrier of luck and prosperity, too”.
