The packed auditorium at St Andrew’s College resonated with giggles and laughter every few seconds as four teams battled it out at the finale of the college’s 11th annual theatre fest Olio, on Wednesday.
After making through the eliminations round held last month, teams from St. Xavier’s, St. Andrew’s, Wilson and Lala Lajpat Rai presented plays on this year’s finale theme, ‘Laughter is the best medicine’. Earlier themes included ‘Mumbai Masala’, ‘Superheroes’ and ‘Retro’ among others.
This year, Let Live and Laugh, a period costume comedy act by St Andrew’s College bagged the first prize. “The play is about the fight between two knights, who are in love with the same lady. They try to impress her by finding the funniest joke in the world and making her read it aloud,” says Johanan Newnes, OC and play director. The fact that the stage name of the lady in question was ‘Thoooo’ (a loud spitting sound) was the most hillarious element in the play. It also went on to win prizes for Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Runner-up Actor and Runner-up Actress.
Wilson College won the runner-up prize with their slapstick act titled, Toilet Humour — another crowd favourite. “This play was enjoyable to watch as the students put in a lot of effort and humour in their acts. The play by St Xavier’s, which was an adaptation of Woody Allen’s short story, The Whore of Mensa, was unique with its furniture props made out of novels and the pop-art inspired stage backdrop,” says Arundhati Chatterjee, a TYBMM student of St Andrew’s College.
