Who says Delhiites don’t want the Commonwealth Games to be a resounding success? In the past few days, voices of support have sprung up all over the Capital, asking people to support the Games. On Facebook, there’s a new group called ‘Stop Criticising Commonwealth Games’.
“Games are around the corner... let’s show the world what India can do!” says the administrator. Prashant Dubey, a group member, wrote, “Everyone’s gotta do their bit. Jai Hind. Hail CWG Delhi 2010 (sic).”
On the Games’ official Facebook group, ‘XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi’, which has 38,857 fans, Harshit Gangwar wrote, “I have put all my efforts into making my friends realise that CWG is gonna be a great event in India. Count the positive as we should all come out and play.” On the Games’ unofficial fanpage, which has 46,900 members, user Rashy Dhanyee wrote, “We should solve the problems and not complain about them. I’m a player myself and it is a great opportunity for us. If the Games are not held, we can’t improve the present condition of sports in india.”
In response to a column by HT City’s Damini Purkayastha, titled ‘No, I hope the Games will NOT be a disaster’, several readers wrote to us asking the people of Delhi to rally around the Games. “It’s very sad to see how pessimistic our city has become about the Games. There is an inevitable law of development work — when development takes place, there are bound to be some people who will suffer.
But those are the same people who will reap the benefits once the work is done. “Somehow people fail to see that logic. I can hardly wait till October, when the city will come alive with people from all across the world. Lucky to be living in Delhi I say,” wrote Dig Vijoy Sodhi, a reader.
