Marking Kurosawa's birth centenary with film fest

Legendary Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa's birth centenary will be celebrated through a four-city film festival. The Kurosawa Film Festival will be held in Kolkata, Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi.

Legendary Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa's birth centenary will be celebrated through a four-city film festival organised by Shemaroo World Cinema.

The Kurosawa Film Festival will be held in Kolkata, Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi. The three-day festival will kickstart in Kolkata July 24 and end in September, said a press statement.

Shemaroo will also launch four of Kurosawa's movies on DVD namely Rashomon, Ran, Madadayo and Quiet Duel, and these will also be available with Hindi sub-titles.

Legendary filmmaker Kurosawa entered the film industry in 1936 as an assistant director to Kajiro Yamamoto. He directed his first feature, Sanshiro Sugata in 1943. After working in a wide range of genres, he made a breakthrough with his 1950 movie Rashomon, about a bandit attacking a samurai and his wife,

Some of his masterpieces include, Shichinin No Samurai (1954), The Magnificent Seven (1960), and Yojimbo (1961), which were later remade by Americana and European filmmakers.
