More Power to Moms

At a dinner last week, the topic of conversation among a group of single career women and young stay-at-home moms turned to how women were choosing to concentrate on their careers and thus having their first baby much later in life than has been the norm.

At a dinner last week, the topic of conversation among a group of single career women and young stay-at-home moms turned to how women were choosing to concentrate on their careers and thus having their first baby much later in life than has been the norm.

The moms felt that their lives had changed for the better, and motherhood had brought a new dimension to them that was far more satisfying than any career perk. The ‘I’ve wanted to do this for myself now’ clan, without refuting what the young mothers were saying, added that in today’s world of opportunity, they didn’t want to get left behind after devoting most of their twenties to climbing up the achievement ladder in their respective workplaces, and that to really maximise and enjoy the benefits of all that hard work later, opting to have babies in their mid or late thirties was a sensible option.

Last year, I remember watching 27-year-old Kim Clijsters holding on to her beautiful baby girl in one arm while receiving the US Open Women’s Singles Trophy with the other! At the start of 2009, the ex-tennis champ was out of shape, looking after her baby daughter. After retiring from tennis in 2007, Clijsters settled down in Belgium with her husband to raise a family. The death of her father led her back to the tennis courts, finding solace in the discipline of the game.



Out of practice for over two years and far removed from the professional circuit, Clijsters wondered if she still had the competitive spirit left in her. She called up her coach and asked if they had what it took, once more. Nine months later, she defeated no worthier an opponent than Serena Williams to become the first mother since 1980 to win the trophy!
