It has been over six years since Konkona Sen Sharma worked with her mother Aparna Sen in a film. Now, they will be seen together in a Bengali movie that is not only being directed by Sen after 10 years, but also has her acting in it. Iti Mrinalini is expecetd to hit theatres around the end of the year.
“The central character (Mrinalini) is of an ageing actor who wants to commit suicide, I play the role of a younger her, while my mother plays the actor at her current age,” says Konkona, who recently rubbished rumours of the film being inspired by her mother’s real life story. The duo last worked together on 15, Park Avenue in 2005 preceded by Mr and Mrs Iyer in 2002. While the latter won Sen a National Film Award for her direction, it got Konkona, an acting award.
Mother to mother
The actor who recently got married to Ranvir Shorey is now expecting a baby herself. On the verge of becoming a mother, Konkona says working with her mother was always a “wonderful experience.” “It’s always great to be part of a film done by my mom. We’ll be working together after a while.” I am always thrilled about working with her, I look forward to it and admire her work,” she says.
Does she get to take advantage of the fact that she is the daughter and can afford to get away with certain things? "Well, being my mother, I do have certain advantages in terms of communication channels, accessibility and trust," says Konkona, in humour, but soon adds, "She’s generally quite a taskmaster, but that comes from being the perfectionist that she is. She pushes me to do my best in a certain manner."
