It’s not just Mumbai’s cops who were asked not to use any raunchy ringtones; Delhi Police too, has banned Sheila and Munni during working hours.
Recently, the Mumbai Police sent out a circular, asking cops to keep “decent” ringtones, as raunchy songs make people uncomfortable when they visit the police station. A similar rule is applicable in Delhi too.
“Delhi policemen are not allowed to put Bollywood songs or item numbers as caller tunes or ringtones on their official phones. On their personal numbers, it is up to them,” says Rajan Bhagat, PRO of Delhi Police. He explains that cops above the rank of SHO are given official phones and those with personal phones usually avoid any indecent ringtones.
“There is no restriction on what we use, but we avoid indecent songs as it doesn’t look good,” says SHO Gajender Singh, whose ringtone is the classic Tring-Tring. Constable Rajender says younger policemen do opt for Bollywood songs — but nothing raunchy. “Some even have the police siren as their ringtone,” he adds. Constable Hemender agrees, adding that his current ringtone is Shirdi Waale Sai Baba.
For most, it’s not even a question of choice. “When women come to us for help, if some dhinchak song or some lyrics like Munni badnaam play, then they may feel uncomfortable. It’s our job to make them feel safe, not awkward,” says a policeman, who wishes not to be named.
