Researchers in Singapore have succeeded in making silkworms produce coloured silk, a media report said.
Eight scientists from the Agency for Science, Technology and Research - a science promotion agency in Singapore - have been working on a project since 2009, and have now succeeded by mixing the silkworms' diet with mulberry powder and a special coloured substance.

This method will allow the textile industry to bypass dyeing of silk in the traditional process, Xinhua reported citing Channel NewsAsia.
The new process saves water and uses less resources than traditional methods, the scientists said.
