Want to know what exactly your constituent’s MP or MLA gets paid for? Do you find political jargon like 'walk-out' and 'question hour' too difficult to comprehend? Now you too can be a part of our parliamentary system. Just for a day.

Rotaract Mumbai is organising a one-day workshop called Model Indian Parliamentary System, or MIPS, for people in the age group of 16-30 years. MIPS will simulate the Indian parliamentary system and provide youth with an opportunity to learn its formalities and concepts. MIPS will also help train young students in the art of public speaking, constructive thinking, debate and leadership. The idea is to sensitise them towards the country’s problems, enabling them to better understand the democratic process.

Go register
"We want people to understand how the parliament actually works and create awareness about the political system. The idea is to educate the youth and hope that some will be inspired enough to join politics,” says Kapil Kulkarni, Rotaract Mumbai. There are 150 seats available in the session and 50 people have already registered.

To be a part of the programme, you need to register yourself. The Rotaract members will then get in touch with you and conduct orientation sessions to brief you on how the parliament works and what you can expect during the session. Registered members will also be divided into two to five political parties. The earlier you register, the higher the chance of you being a part of a party that supports your political orientation. "Last time, we had encouraged people to vote during the elections. We are taking our work forward this time by getting them to understand the political system," says Kulkarni.

You will learn
What are the functions and duties of elected representatives
What is a walk out and why it happens
What is question hour
How bills are introduced and debated in Parliament
What is the democratic process for government formation
What does one mean by Left parties

MIPS will be held on February 5, from 8 am to 4pm at the Rotary Service Centre, Juhu. Participants need to be between the age group of 16-30 years. Registration charges per participant: Rs 100.
