If opposites attract, filmmakers may well have struck gold! Adventurous directors are trying out unusual pairings in upcoming films. Take, for example, Akshay Kumar-Chitrangada Singh, Irrfan Khan-Priyanka Chopra or Abhay Deol-Sonam Kapoor.
While Chitrangada and Akshay have teamed up in in Rohit Dhawan’s Desi Boys, offbeat actor Irrfan and glamour girl Priyanka star in Vishal Bharadwaj’s Saat Khoon Maaf. Experimental actor Abhay will rub shoulders with Sonam in Aisha, who’s done several commercial movies. Ajay Devgn and Kangana Ranaut are another unconventional pair, starring in Ekta Kapoor’s film Once Upon A Time In Mumbai.
“There are a handful of big stars and directors run out of stars because of their busy schedules. These days scripts give directors the freedom to experiment and give a fresh look to the story. Star value is not the only unique selling proposition of the movie, unlike earlier when we mostly saw fixed pairings of Dharmendra with Hema Malini and Amitabh Bachchan with Jaya Bachchan” says film critic Omar Qureshi.
Last year, Konkona Sen Sharma’s pairing with Ranbir Kapoor in Wake Up Sid, was appreciated by critics. Explaining why directors choose such unlikely pairs to star together, film critic Anupama Chopra says “There is a dearth of good and saleable stars in the Hindi film industry, which produces more than 200 films a year.”
