While we’re all for partying hard on New Year’s Eve, your mantra tonight must be to stay safe and sound. Take a good look at some of these scenes from last year, clicked by our shutterbugs outside leading Delhi clubs. While some youngsters lay drunk and passed out, others got into fights or misbehaved.

Police records reveal that in the wee hours of Jan 1, 2011, 484 Delhiites were challaned, of which 388 were fined for drunk driving.

As you step out tonight, be warned that over 3,000 cops will be prowling the streets. If a fine doesn’t worry you, consider this: experts say post-party shame can take the sparkle out of New Year.

“When people drink so much that they misbehave, the post-bingeing guilt catches up the next morning. They are shame-faced and can’t face people for a long time. It’s not a good note to start the New Year on,” says Dr Jitendra Nagpal, senior consultant psychiatrist, Moolchand Hospital.

Safety tips

Do not accept drinks from strangers. To ensure that your drink is not spiked, get it yourself from the bartender and don’t leave it unattended.

Let someone at home know where you are going for a party and keep them updated about your movements.

Keep emergency numbers on your speed dial.

Assign a designated driver so no one drinks and drives.
