Deaths before dowry
You may have read an occasional news piece about sisters committing suicide together. It's an act of desperation that keeps repeating itself in a country that has not been able to banish the spectre of dowry. But ever wondered what might have transpired before such an act? Being filmmakers of a certain persuasion, Kundan Shah and Shekhar Hattangadi have. And they have co-directed a two-hour, low-budget feature that fleshes out a fiction beyond such a headline - Teen Behenein. The three sisters of a poor household are about to hang themselves. Revisit a revolution
An exhibition titled 1956 -The Hope of Freedom commemorates the 55th anniversary of the Hungarian revolution and 22 years as a democratic republic. The 19-day revolution was a revolt against the People's Republic of Hungary. The changes following that led to communism breakdown in the region and collapse of the Berlin wall. Displayed in a documentary format, the photos depict how a student demonstration led to the fall of a regime. Till Oct 30, Hungarian Information and Cultural Centre, 23014992.
Memorials and martyrs
For those who love sauntering about and are interested in history, here's another opportunity to join in a 'historical walk'. The Delhi Heritage Walk organises regular walks that cover the lesser known, nonetheless fascinating parts of Delhi. This week the group heads to Old Delhi, covering the landmarks of the 1857 Uprising. Enthusiasts can explore the remains of the capital city of the Mughals, the houses of British officials living in Shahjahanabad, and other key memorials. Before the festivities take over, treat yourself to an evening of soulful ghazals dedicated to the ghazal greats at IHC today. The programme titled Ek Shaam Ghalib, Daag, Meer, Momin Ke Naam will be performed by Sufi and ghazal singing duo Sada Thakur and Masoom Thakur who have learnt music under the able guidance of Ustad Sabri Khan.
