Call it market correction or smart selection, but Bollywood stars are increasingly concentrating on their own productions rather than films under other banners.

After the super success of

3 Idiots

, Aamir Khan has declared that he will only work in his own productions. He is currently producing Abhinay Deo’s

Delhi Belly

, Anushka Rizvi’s

The Falling

and his wife Kiran Rao’s directorial debut,

Dhobi Ghaat

.

Saif Ali Khan, too, is “only concentrating on my home production”, Agent Vinod.

Shah Rukh Khan’s only upcoming release,

My Name Is Khan

, is a co-production with Karan Johar. In February, SRK leaves for Miami to shoot his next home production,

RA1

, with Kareena Kapoor.

Akshay Kumar is co-producing every film that he is acting in. For his next two ventures,

Khatta Meetha

and

Tees Maar Khan

, Akshay has even done away with his fees. He says, “I will never produce a film alone because whatever loss or profit I incur, I want to share it with my partner.”

Film critic Rajeev Masand explains, “By producing or co-producing their own films, stars want control over the marketing and distribution of the film. They realise that they bring a certain value to the film and feel that it’s better that they themselves reap the benefits instead of others.”
