Varun Gambhir, a budding fashion merchandiser, has invented the Paper Yarn Fabric. It’s made of paper that’s pulped out of recycled cotton. Sounds complicated? Not for him. It got him the prestigious Fashioning the Future Award from Centre for Sustainable Fashion, London College of Fashion (LCF), UK, thus making him the only Indian to win in a category of five.
Gambhir, a final year student at the Pearl Academy of Fashion, Delhi, is ecstatic. He said, “The fabric is durable, thus bags, home furnishings and handicraft items can be made out of it. It can solve various environment-related problems as paper garbage is used to produce this fabric.”
Andrew Hughes, dean at the School of Management & Science, LCF, said, “The awards aim to celebrate innovation in the ways in which we design, produce, consume and value fashion.”
Gambhir will be flying to LCF in March-April to attend an interaction with industry biggies in London to learn more about the opportunities of commercial use of this unique fabric.
