The media has been camping outside the St Mary’s Hospital in central London for weeks now. And bookies have been busy for some time now trying to guess the royal baby’s gender and name. But the birth of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s son was a first of sorts for the British royals. The little prince’s arrival took the monarchy into the digital age.

In keeping with tradition, a car drove to Buckingham Palace, carrying news of the baby’s birth. However, before the palace could make the news public, Clarence House tweeted: “Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4.24pm. (sic)”

That was not all. The Twitter handle of Clarence House encouraged people around the world to join in wishing the new parents and followed the tweet with:
“Use our hashtag #WelcometotheWorld to tell us about any other new arrivals today — we would love to hear from you! RoyalBaby. (sic).” And for those who wanted to offer personalised greetings, a Google card was also put up. It went like this: “It’s a Prince — sign the card and send your congratulations”.
