Actor Salman Khan is on a blood-donating spree. But Sallu, who has donated blood twice within three weeks time in highly publicised events, clearly doesn’t know that blood donation in quick intervals can be highly dangerous.

Experts say that the ideal time gap between blood donations should be three months. Salman first donated blood in Maldives at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital on July 26, and more recently on Sunday, in Mumbai at a blood donation camp in Almeida Park.

“The second time was too soon. His body would not have got sufficient time to recoup after the first round, and this is harmful. A donor should be healthy and not become anemic himself,” says Neelam Verma, a physician in Kailash Colony.

One unit of blood — the most that an adult can donate — is equal to 330 ml, and it takes a minimum of three to four months for a person to recover after that. “He is 45-years-old and, at his age, he should be a lot more careful. At this rate he may develop nausea, vomiting, dizziness and weakness. It’s very unsafe,” says Dr Rishi Soni, who has a clinic in Lajpat Nagar. “It’s a noble cause, but it shouldn’t be promoted at the cost of one’s own health,” said Verma.
