Joy Dutta studied applied arts and ventured into commercial photography a decade ago. The lensman says, “Cinema has always been the driving force behind my visuals. While shooting portraits, I assess the best angles for the person and choose the best lighting sources to enhance that.” According to Joy, the right angles help capture emotions and expressions better. He opines that the most important lesson for any emerging photographer is to believe in their abilities. He adds, “With digital technology, one has to take the least help of technology to retain the original quality of the images.”

For Sonia Gandhi to take on the mantle of leadership of our country speaks volumes of her efforts made in fronting a democracy like India. This picture was taken when she was campaigning in Dumka, Jharkhand. On her way back to Dumka airport, much to the disappointment of her security, she stood up from inside the car and waved out to the group of school children who had come to give her flowers. She had a young girl-like energy and smile.

While promoting a film Ajay and Kajol had produced, I was called in to shoot for a jewellery brand they were endorsing as a couple. Right at the onset, Ajay put Kajol in front of him and requested he be shot as her prop. Kajol’s infectious giggles didn’t stop while he charmed her for the camera. They symbolise a true celluloid dream.

I photographed him when he had visited as guest of honour in Ranchi at the invitation of educationist Amith Bajla. His humour and humility sparked a sense of the highest pride in all around.

‘Playing Deep Purple’
I had the opportunity to photograph the Chote Nawab on five feature films back to back. This image is very special because he was sitting in the same toy train in Darjeeling where ‘Mere Sapno Ki Rani...’ from Aradhna was picturised on his mother Sharmila Tagore and Rajesh Khanna. In between shots, he was strumming tunes from AC/DC and Deep Purple.

‘Dhoni created this character, Shambhu’
The Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is an example of grit, integrity and extreme humility. His whacko hair stylist friend Sapna Bhavnani wanted to do something absolutely crazy with him for her salon. In less than five minutes, Dhoni was inhabiting a self-created character called Shambhu. While Sapna cut and stuck the eyebrows and mustache on, Dhoni was busy shaping out the furry mole on his cheeks.
