Enlighten Film Society is screening some of the most popular, award-winning documentaries in city multiplexes.

“We hadn’t done a documentary festival before. And documentaries always get amazing response. I feel non-fiction always gets a better response than fiction,” says Pranav Ashar, president, Enlighten Film Society.

“The best part of these films is that anybody can enjoy them,” he adds, “The Indian documentaries are in vernacular, so language isn’t a barrier at all.”

But are these films screened with a specific audience in mind? “Of course not. We have handpicked these films because they provide entertainment along with information. The audience would demand entertainment at the end of the day.”
The ones who register for the festival will get to watch the all-time favourite Godfather part I and II, at the end of the month.

He says he included War and Peace because the nuclear issue needs to be thought and re-thought.

So, is he hopeful on the future of documentaries in India?

“If Bollywood starts making documentaries, it will be the end of it. Bollywood documentary is already happening as reality TV,” asserts Patwardhan. He feels people are ready to pay for good documentaries at multiplexes.
